Edukacj\u0119 pianistyczn\u0105 rozpocz\u0105\u0142 w Krakowie pod okiem Kazimierza Wojciechowskiego i Jana Germasza, a w zakresie kompozycji kszta\u0142ci\u0142 si\u0119 u Franciszka Mireckiego. Nast\u0119pnie przeni\u00f3s\u0142 si\u0119 do Warszawy, gdzie po \u015bmierci Stanis\u0142awa Moniuszki obj\u0105\u0142 katedr\u0119 harmonii i kontrapunktu w Konserwatorium. W 1878 roku zosta\u0142 dyrektorem artystycznym Warszawskiego Towarzystwa Muzycznego. W 1881 roku wr\u00f3ci\u0142 na sta\u0142e do Krakowa i za\u0142o\u017cy\u0142 Konserwatorium Krakowskie, kt\u00f3rym kierowa\u0142 a\u017c do \u015bmierci.
